Story

In the small town of Mujishi, the residents start turning one by one into monsters after inhaling a strange black smoke that seems to come from a huge hole in the middle of the ground in the forest. However, detective Hwa Sun can fight back, even though she has been infected by it. And she takes in a group of survivors that struggle to survive amidst those crazy events.

Korean Drama Dark Hole is more suspenseful than horror, offering a haunting mystery with loads of action scenes and thrilling twists.

The drama focuses on the small group of survivors, and especially on Hwa Sun and Tae Han, the two leading characters who are trying to solve the mystery along with enduring the multiple attacks of the mutants.

And though the zombie-like monsters are nicely made and well-acted, they’re more like the bad guys in a thriller than creepy nightmare creatures. And that worked great on the drama’s advantage, as the real horror comes from the people themselves, like the small religious group that was created, or the school social classes.

The dynamics between the survivors were also a key point that brought out excitement and tension, as the tables were turned more than once. Plus, there was the past mystery surrounding Hwa Sun’s husband who had died at the beginning of the drama.

However, the ending, though sad, it was rushed and kind of predictable, showing many tropes that are often used in those kinds of stories.

Characters

Hwa Sun is a detective from Seoul who has recently lost her husband and is trying to find his killer. In search of the culprit, she comes close to the mysterious dark hole and gets to inhale the black smoke. However, her strong will and practical mind prevent her from turning into a zombie-like the others.

Kim Ok Bin was a delight to watch, strong and dynamic, with killer action scenes.

Tae Han is a local driver who joins forces with Hwa Sun to help others out. He likes to joke around, but he is ready to do anything to survive.

Lee Joon Hyuk was the perfect partner for Kim Ok Bin’s character and he gave a smooth performance.

Seon Nyeo is a saman who had been disappointed by the deity that she used to serve, as she has always been humiliated by those around her. So she finds the opportunity to actually become great by introducing the dark hole as a deity and gaining power by it.

Song Sang Eun did a really good job with her character.
