Story

600 years ago, Hwal was made a Bulgusal, a monster who was said to be hunting him since birth. And on the same day, the previous Bulgusal killed his family and stole his soul. Now, Hwal is trying to find the reincarnation of the woman who caused him all this pain and gets his revenge. And his research brings him to Sang Un, a young woman who has been running away from the monster all her life.

Korean Drama Bulgusal: The Immortal Souls is a fantasy drama which didn’t focus too much on the romance.

Rather, it was more about the bonds formed between the characters, and their small, odd family.

The short adventures that the main characters face, mostly being chased by monsters, were pretty interesting, but they were contained only in the first part of the drama. Thus, after that, the story got more about trying to find out what happened in the past in order to find a solution for the present.

Unfortunately, at this part, the plot was going in circles and nothing really happened. There were some twists here and there, yes, but for most of the episode’s length, the story was slow and boring.

In addition, things got out of hand, with too many twists concerning the past events and the nature of Bulgusal. And it was confusing to follow at some point. Furthermore, the main villain was trying to be hateful and, at the same time, likable, which was likewise complicating things.

As for the ending, it was unique and, fortunately, didn’t follow any cliche, cheesy conclusion for the sake of the romance. Which also proved that the drama wasn’t about the love story, to begin with.

Characters

Hwal has been followed by a curse and mistreatment all his life. He became a monster hunter until a Bulgusal killed his family and turned him into one as well. But that didn’t cause him to lose his humanity. Rather, he fought back to not become a monster and gain his soul back.

Lee Jin Wook gave a smooth performance, but his character was too sheepish and lacked that intense, dark aura.

Sang Un is a woman who has been running away from the Bulgusal all her life, after losing her mother and sister to him. But she has seen enough and she is ready to fight and gain a normal life.

Kwon Na Ra was really good in this one and gave an emotional performance.

Eul Tae is Hwal’s antagonist. He is trying to get to Sang Un and release himself from the curse her past self had inflicted on him.

Lee Joon gave an enjoyable performance.

Shi Ho is Sang Un’s sister. She is a dynamic young woman who is willing to raise her child on her own. She is also the reincarnation of Hwal’s wife.

Gong Seung Yeon was a nice second lead.

Do Yoon is an orphaned boy who was saved by Hwal and, after that, he decided to stay by his side, despite Hwal’s nature.

Kim Woo Seok did a really good job with his character and showed improvement compared to his last drama.

Cinematography

The drama had amazing cinematography, though the scene used to present the passing of time were too long and not handled well. On the other hand, the OST was just right for the story.

Overall

My overall rating for the Korean Drama Bulgasal: Immortal Souls is 6.5 out of 10. The drama had interesting fantasy elements and beautiful cinematography, but it was slow and confusing.
