Flower Crew started strongly, but got boring quickly.
Story
Ma Hoon and his crew are matchmakers. They can guarantee success for everyone that asks for their help. That’s why Lee Soo, a poor blacksmith, seeks for their services in order to convince the woman he loves, Gae Dong, to marry him. Gae Dong is so poor that she takes up any job that she can get, even if it is one that none would have done it. She is, thus, very unladylike and too sassy and unmannered. Her only family is her brother, who has been missing for years and she is saving money in order to hire someone to find him. Because of her past and her unfortunate present status, she resists marrying Lee Soo, but, eventually, she caves in. However, on the day of their wedding, Lee Soo disappears. Having to pay the costs of their wedding and being conned by the man who was hired to find her brother, she begs to start working for the matchmakers. But to do so, she has to start behaving like a proper lady. Slowly, she finds her feminine side while Ma Hoon starts to fall for her.
In the meantime, Lee Soo finds himself in the palace, being called the king. apparently, his father is not his real one, but one employed by the king to have him live a normal life, hoping that he will never have to enter the arena that is the palace. But, having the king dead and no one to take his place, Lee Soo had to be summoned. Now the boy has to navigate his way through palace politics and find a way to get back to Gae Dong, even though she is not an aristocrat.
The drama had a nice start, with Gae Dong and Lee Soo’s story being pretty sweet and lovely, with their romance too good to keep on, as it did. The flower crew was overall pretty entertaining too, as the characters were interesting and unique. However, there were not enough cases for them to pick up and they pretty much cornered themselves to the trope of Gae Dong finding Lee Soo and the love triangle. Also, the reforming of Gae Dong took up most of the drama’s time. Towards the ending, there was the addition of Young Soo’s story, the youngest member of the flower crew, which was enjoyable, but, other than that, the rest was a basic romantic comedy plot, predictable and boring.
Characters
Gae Dong is all alone, fighting for her survival. Her only hope is her brother, whom she is trying to find. When she joins the matchmakers, she proves to be a romantic soul who wants to help people find love. Gong Seung Yeon’s character was annoying and just too perky, although the actress did a decent job with her character.
Lee Soo is a hardworking man who, even though he is poor, is optimistic and wants to love. When he finds out that he is the king, he slowly adapts to his new role and uses his experience and background as fuel to help his people and survive the palace politics. Seo Ji Soo knows how to play dramatic roles and he portrayed his character nicely.
Ma Hoon is an aristocrat who doesn’t believe in what his father is trying to achieve. He just wants to help people find love. However, due to some unfortunate experiences of the past, he is now a closed character who doesn’t let anyone come too close to him. Kim Min Jae handled his role perfectly and he was a nice main lead.
Cinematography
The drama didn’t manage the pace properly, but they did a good job with the twists.
Overall
My overall rating is 6 out of 10. Although the story had potential, as it did for the other versions of it, the drama got boring quickly.
