My Mister was a buzzy drama due to IU being the leading lady. It soon lost its place among the fans’ top views, as it didn’t turn out to be the romantic story that we usually watch in dramaland. However, it captured the hearts of the melodrama fans, with its dark and odd story.

Story

Ji Ahn is a poor young lady. She works several part-time jobs, where she’s forced to steal food from in order to feed herself and her grandmother, who is sick but she can’t afford to have her hospitalized. She actually stole her from a hospital, in order to get her back to their tiny apartment. She also gets beaten up by a loan shark, to whom she has to pay off her family debt.

Ji Ahn then is approached by Joon Young, the CEO of the company she works in. He asks her to help him get rid of her boss, Joon Young’s college senior and his lover’s husband. After presenting her with a big sum of money, Ji Ahn agrees. She then bugs her boss’s cell phone with an app that allows her to listen to him through the phone.

Dong Hoon is the boss in question. He doesn’t know that his wife is having an affair. He also has to take care of his two unemployed brothers. His life is disturbed when he receives a bribe, which Ji Anh witnesses and helps him get rid off before the security reaches him.

So, overall, it’s quite an interesting story. The two first episodes, I’ll admit, where a bit of a letdown, cause they were too confusing. The plot gets better later on. It is a unique theme, with the whole bug thing on the cell phone, which allowed the leading lady to listen to her boss and get to know him. Also, the family drama and the story of each character were interesting as well. Fortunately, the story never turned into a loved one.

Character

The highlight of this drama is its characters and the performances, that were all great. Ji Ahn was a character that you might hate at first but end up loving. She is presented as a get my way girl but she has so many layers, as does her story, that are unveiled slowly throughout the drama. IU was really good presenting a more dramatic heroine this time around and she nailed the tragic scenes.

Lee Sun Kyun had a tricky character to embody. Although he seemed quiet and composed, leading a normal, quiet life, everyone worked for his fall in the background. He turned more resourceful and more dramatic, especially towards the end, and he expressed various emotions, as his life took a turn towards hell.

The other characters were nice as well, though their stories weren’t properly concluded. I had to add here that the actress was kind of annoying, but she was a secondary character, so I’ll let this one pass.

Cinematography

The scenes were kind of dark, mostly night shoots or rainy days. I guess they wanted to stress the tragic vibe of the drama and not allow any sunny, springy scenes that will suggest happiness and tranquility.
