Story

One day, creatures from hell start appearing, chasing down people, beating them to death and then letting them burn up. They say that it is the punishment from hell for the people’s sins. In these mad and uncertain times, a new religious group appears, the New Truth, who starts running the country. However, there are still those who want to get to the bottom of the truth.

Korean Drama Hellbound is a complicated story spread into a small space of time.

The story starts right in the middle of the action when the angels from hell appear and the new cult leader starts preaching about them and gains the people’s attention. Things spiral out of control from thereon.

However, and even though there is a lot of mystery and thrilling moments that keep things interesting, the drama is so hectic, that characters keep coming and going at a light-speed pace.

The action is also fast, resulting in some plotlines being left open or half-baked. Therefore, some stories needed more in-depth presentation and more exploration of what was going on.

The characters were another part of the drama that suffered by its pace, as they often were replaced between episodes, robbing the viewer of the opportunity to get to know them and figure out what was happening.

And yet, somehow the story felt less. A lot of events occurred, but nothing with meaning or moving towards solving the case.

And even though everything happens fast, the main question of what is the hell angels was left unanswered. Actually, that mystery didn’t even begin to be investigated or questioned.

Characters

Jin Soo is the first person who talked about the angels from hell. He had seen them while hiking and, after that, he changed his life and dedicated it to spreading his knowledge to the world. He is very charismatic and spellbound people with his words.

Yoo Ah In’s comeback feels like he was never absent. However, his character needed more time to shine.

Kyung Hoon is a detective who is in the team who first tried to solve the hellbound cases. He is not convinced by what Jin Soo is preaching and he wants to get to the bottom of the truth.

Yang Ik Jun is another actor that chooses few projects to participate in and, as with Yoo Ah In’s case, although he was great with his performance, especially with his emotional scenes, he needed more screen time.

Hye Jin is a lawyer who had been questioning Jin Soo’s intentions. She is also afraid of where things are going and wants to stand up against it, even though that makes her a target.

Kim Hyun Joo was very dynamic and nailed her action scenes.

Cinematography

The drama had decent CGI and a speedy pace, which often messed up the timeline.

Overall

My overall rating for the Korean Drama Hellbound is 6.5 out of 10. The drama needed more time for the story to be evenly spread and properly presented.
