Korean Drama D.P. is a raw story of military bullying
Story
Joon Ho is trying to survive his military service by blending in with the crowd and staying out of sight from those who mean trouble. But when he joins the defector team for capturing deserters, he will come face to face with the ugly truth.
Korean Drama D.P. keeps things simple, allowing the drama to ooze out of the actual story that it narrates.
The drama starts by introducing the main character, Joon Ho, the military life, and some of the other characters that come and go. And then slowly it infuses the short stories of those deserters. All of them were different and yet, somehow, they had the same bottom line and trigger point.
Probably the shocking factor of the drama is the reality it exposes. It doesn’t only feel real, but familiar too, and yet the viewer kind of knows that this can and might have already happened.
The rawness of that reality also comes from the ending, which doesn’t sugarcoat the outcome and leaves the viewer feeling the same way the main character does.
That is probably why Joon Ho as a character is a plain one, with a few hints of who he is, but an overall tabula rasa canvas where everyone could relate. That option leaves room for the short stories of the deserters that occupy most of the drama to shine and be more intense.
Characters
Joon Ho is a newly enlisted soldier who is trying to fit in while thinking about the family he left behind. He wants to focus on following the rules, but the things he sees happening around him will shake his belief on the system.
Jung Hae In did a great job with his performance, as always and he didn’t overdo it with the drama.
Watch Jung Hae In KDrama A piece of your mind
Ho Yul is Joon Ho’s senior in the D.P. department. He is charismatic when it comes to dealing with people and extracting information.
Koo Kyo Hwan had an interesting character and plenty of charm to support him.
Cinematography
The drama had a smooth pace and the camerawork as well as the lighting were perfect to create a dark atmosphere.
Overall
My overall rating for the Korean Drama D.P. is 8 out of 10. A short but strong drama.
