It’s okay to not be okay is a dark fairy tale with intense performances but a slow storyline.
Story
Gang Tae works as a caregiver. He empathizes with his patients, but he doesn’t like to show his own emotions and shies off connecting and bonding with other people. That is until he meets Moon Young, a children’s book writer who is cold, selfish and childish and feels fascinated by Gang Tae, that is why she is willing to do anything to make him hers. However, there are a lot of things that prevent them from being together, including their tragic past.
It’s okay to not be okay deals with many mental health issues, as the three main characters all struggled with trauma, but they found comfort by helping each other. So it was nice to watch their journey of healing and forgiveness.
The romance was just right for the story, too, as it was innocent, with a smooth pace and a bit of a quirky progress. Sure the leading lady was aggressive at times, but the couple had chemistry and their dynamics worked nicely when added together.
However, the drama’s story was so thinly spread that some episodes added up tiring and almost pointless. Sure, you get to see some funny and cute moments, or a bit of the side stories, but the main mystery was boring in the end, with a weak conclusion and some convenient circumstances.
In addition, the side characters were mostly overlooked and were given some boring storylines. Still, the dialogues were clever and well written, the humor added in the right moments and the horror vibes smoothly handled.
Characters
Gang Tae is working as a caregiver. He has changed many hospitals and clinics, as he often is forced to move because of his older brother who suffers from a trauma and is afraid that someone is chasing him. Gang Tae has always been taking care of his brother, especially since his mother died, and he often feels that that obligation burdens him and prevents him from living his own life and doing what he wants to do. Still, he keeps everything to himself and shuts people out, pretending to be happy when he is not.
After a long, long time, Kim Soo Hyun returns with a bang. His emotional scenes were just perfect and proved the quality of an actor that he is.
Moon Young is a children’s book author. She writes mostly dark themes, but she is very popular, despite her rude attitude and selfish character. When she meets Gang Tae, she is intrigued by his passive reaction to her childish mood changes and she finds it a challenge to win him over.
Sep Ye Ji did an amazing job with her character and she dominated the drama with her strong personality.
Sang Tae is Gang Tae’s older brother. He is a man with special needs, but he is a very talented artist who loves to draw and dreams of one day buying a car and travel around with his brother.
If Kim Soo Hyun was amazing, Oh Jung Se was incredible. His performance was strong, without overdoing it, with a sensibility towards the character he portrayed and an energy that captures the audience.
Cinematography
The drama managed the goth atmosphere perfectly, creating a dark fairy tale that fitted the story.
Overall
My overall rating for the Korean drama It’s okay to not be okay is 7 out of 10. The drama had a waterdown story, but killer performances.
