Almost Famous had an interesting idea for a story, but it didn’t pull it through.

Story

So Ri is half celebrity. She has appeared in some dramas and she has been trying to become famous for years now, even by joining an idol group. However, she is still not quite there. She works at a cafe and she is struggling to get parts. That is why a TV show selects her as their main subject to follow her progress of becoming famous.

Almost famous chose an interesting way to present the story. They made it look like a mockumentary, centering around So Ri and how she is finding her way into the limelight. Her struggles and way she handled the difficulties were entertaining and interesting to follow.

However, the drama quickly turned into romance focused, with So Ri getting together with her partner in one of the variety shows that she participated in (one that the drama skipped and showed us the aftermath).

The love story was too quick and it was hard to get into it, as they just jumped into the relationship from the very start and the drama didn’t give some background information on her love interest or a smooth progress of them meeting up.

Apart from the romance that just didn’t work for this drama, the family drama was pretty interesting, although the drama scratched only the surface of So Ri’s relationship with her mother.

So Ri’s past along with her friendship with her ex bandmates was cute as well and it would have been great if they had focused more on her and her antagonist rather than the boring love triangle, though the ending was pretty great and original.

Characters

So Ri is dreaming of becoming a celebrity. She has been trying to fulfill her dream for years now, but she just finds it hard to become famous. She finally gets her shot after a successful variety program that she was in. However, she will soon find out that is more difficult to handle the spotlight than she thought.

Kim So Ri was really good, especially since the drama was so character centered.

Su Yeon was to debut with So Ri in an idol group, but left them just before debut to pursue her own career. Since then, she has become a big star, and now she is looking down on So Ri who is still struggling to reach the top.

Choi Hye Jin had a really interesting character and she handle it perfectly.

Woo Jin is a business man who met So Ri in a variety program and fell in love with her. However, he finds it difficult to find the balance between their relationship and her career.

Yoo Woo Jin did a nice job with his performance.

The drama had a smooth, quick pace, but they lost their focus from So Ri to her love life.

Overall

My overall rating for the Korean Drama Almost Famous is 5 out of 10. The drama had an original story, but they fell into the well known trops.
