Story

Back in middle school, Futaba was friends with a boy named Kou, until he moved away. Three years later he is back, with a different surname and a cold personality that doesn’t resemble the Kou of the past. As Futaba starts to learn more about her estranged friend, feelings that she believed had left in the past.

Japanese Drama Ao Haru Ride Season One is the series adaption of the popular shoujo manga, which has also been made into an anime as well as a movie in the past.

This version takes a deeper dive into Kou, his past, and the reasons that transformed him from the ideal boyfriend material to a troubled young man. So, when it came to that, the drama did a great job handling the story in a sensitive way that helped the viewer understand Futaba’s feelings.

At the same time, however, the series was like a watered-down version of the story. They presented the highlights of it, but it was like they brushed through them. Therefore, they lacked soul and intensity which would have aided with the enjoyment of the love story.

Still, the drama had the right youthful vibes and some specs of friendship that were starting to bloom gradually as the drama progressed.

Characters

Fuataba is a high school student who is friendly and warm, but she overdoes it sometimes by being eager to help others out.

Deguchi Netsuki was the excellent as Futaba, with a subtle but solid performance.

Kou is a handsome young man who is cold and unapproachable, the total opposite of what he used to be.

Sakurai Kaito was the perfect actor to play Kou, as he looks exactly like the one in the manga.
