Story

Two friends, Kiyo and Sumire, move to Kyoto to become Maiko. However, and even though Sumire seems to excel, Kiyo finds it hard to adapt. Thus, she is expelled, but her cooking skills are acknowledged. Hence, Kiyo stays, now working as the caretaker of the house.

Japanese Drama The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House is a cozy, heartwarming drama.

It combines the rituals of becoming a geisha, along with food preparations and sweet friendship moments.

And it’s not just the two main friends that provide a plethora of cute moments. The other maiko and geisha are creating strong bonds with the main characters and their stories are worth following.

Also, the atmosphere of the drama is homey and warm. The cinematography is spot-on as well.

But the stories of the two friends were the main focus of the drama. Their friendship was sweet and it was nice to watch the girls being truly there for each other and not add too much drama to their relationship.
