Story

Dong Joo met Seo Jung when he was the new doctor at a big hospital in Seoul, and Seo Jung was the star of the ER. They had a passionate attraction, however, Seo Jung was already with another doctor and they were preparing to get married when an accident happened that cost her fiancé’s life. Full of guilt, Seo Jung disappears. Some years later, Dong Joo is tricked and is transferred to a small hospital in the countryside, where brilliant sergeant Kim Sa Bu is saving lives with the few means that the hospital can provide. Dong Joo wants nothing but leaves and goes back to the city, believing that he is just too good for his new position. And then he meets Seo Jung again. Turns out, she has been working there the whole time, while trying to recover from an injury at her hand that prevents her from performing surgery. She also fights the demons from her past.

First of all, the drama had a strong main story as the axis on which the rest of the plot lines were added. The romance was nice, intense at first, but didn’t get to be the main focus of the drama, fortunately. On the contrary, the story was more about the two doctors’ lives and how they had to fight their own battles in order to become great doctors. The politics of the ownership of the hospital, along with the old rivals, were entertaining and fascinating, as they did a great job balancing them with the medical cases. The latter was not plenty, but just enough to keep things interesting. Another nice factor was that the side characters were unique and enjoyable to watch. But the star of the drama was doctor Kim. His sassy personality was just perfect to keep things fresh and add some edginess to the drama. So, overall, the story was a heartful medical drama, with a focus on the human side of the doctors and some romance.

Characters

Kim Sa Bu is a talented doctor that can perform miracles under difficult circumstances. He loves his job and can help the others around him in his own, unique way. Han Seok Kyu was brilliant as the beloved Doctor Kim and he nailed those medical scenes.

Dong Joo started from the bottom and made himself a doctor in order to support himself and his mother. Due to the hard life that he had growing up, he is seeking to become a famous doctor and, thus, don’t care about money problems anymore. That is why he is trying to treat VIP patients, as to get recognition. However, his ambitions get in the way of the powerful, and he is soon sent to work at a countryside hospital. And there, even though he was arrogant and full of himself, he starts to see that being a doctor is not about the money. Yoo Yeon Seok had a difficult to like character at first, but, in the end, that personality was what the drama needed as not to be boring, and he performed him flawlessly. He had intense chemistry with his partner as well.

Seo Jung is a young doctor that loves her profession. She used to be a rising star, but, due to an accident, she finds herself struggling to get back in the field. However, she doesn’t give up and she keeps trying to become a doctor that helps those in need. Seo Hyun Jin was exceptional with the dramatic scenes and she gave the drama a more sensitive and warm twist.

In Bum is the son of a powerful hospital president. Due to his family, he has more opportunities and he has been favored by the other doctors and VIP patients, always getting recognition and the best cases. That is why he has an aura of arrogance, thinking that he is the best of the best. Yang Se Jong was Dong Joo’s rival and he did a great job with his character, not overdoing it with the spoiled privileged son, and providing a subtle love triangle with Seo Jung.

Cinematography

The drama did a nice job with the medical cases and the pace was just perfect. However, some operations were just too long and too detailed.

Overall

My overall rating is 8 out of 10. Even though it’s lengthy, the drama was interesting till the very end and presented all the plotlines perfectly.
