Story

In Young is miserable. She is failing her courses, her work at a gallery is taking up most of her time, she has broken up with her boyfriend after 8 years of relationship and she has been a victim of a renting fraud and now, she has no money and nowhere to stay. So, she decides to take extreme measurements and find a fake husband, in order to get the Newlyweds jeonse loan, a government-funded program to help young couple rent homes. To her surprise, Yoon Soo, a popular guy at her college, who, however, has a nasty rumor whispered about him, asks her to marry him. Yoon Soo and In Young had a drank one night stand not long ago, and In Young had been avoiding him since then. However, not having another choice, she takes up his offer and they start living together. However, Yoon Soo has a big secret. The rumor about him having pulled strings in order to get a scholarship to go and study abroad is false, and it ruined his life, as the academics pushed him out of the program because of it and another guy was benefited from it. That other guy is In Young’s ex, Chan Hee. Chan Hee broke up with In Young, after telling her that he will choose to follow his dreams and go study in Paris, rather than continuing a relationship with her, something that he believed would have been an obstacle for his bright future as an artist. In Young has still not gotten over their nasty breakup, but, while she is living with Yoon Soo, she starts to heal little by little, even though Chan Hee is  back in her life again, now as one of the young artists that her gallery is promoting.

“Ending Again” is, apparently, related to the other dramas of Global Playlist, Flower Ever After, and its sequel, The Best Ending, though there were no real parallels to these dramas. Rather, “Ending Again” followed the more mature concept of  “XX”, with some mature scenes being implied here and there, and the characters having, well, more adult relationships. Still, the drama had a cute vibe overall, with the main theme the contract marriage, a concept that many Korean dramas these days tend to follow, though it’s a pretty entertaining one so far. And “Ending Again” didn’t overdo it, rather, they presented it quite decently, at a nice pace and not over the top roommate problems. The romance was well constructed as well, and they did a marvelous job with the ex boyfriend theme, as, at first, we had the female lead being heartbroken and remembering their good times as a couple, and, as the drama progressed, we got to see that their relationship wasn’t all kisses and flowers, rather, they had been starting having problems. That way the main romance had time to breathe and mature more organically, rather than being forced to have them together. In Young’s friend, also, was a nice touch, as she provided enough comical scenes to keep the drama light when it was needed.

However, there were some parts that the drama didn’t handle well. Probably because the length was too short, some plot lines were not properly explained or forgotten. For example, the best friend’s love interest had some suspicious behavior, witnessed by In Young, but later forgotten by the writers. The whole revenge plot was a bit watered down, as they didn’t fully explain what had actually happened between the two guys. The ending was somehow let down too, as the forgiveness part was rather quick and they never had a proper talk about it. Still, the drama was extra cute and had enough romance to make your heart flutter.

The main characters of the korean drama “Ending Again”

Characters

In Young is a college student who tries to balance work, college and her everyday life, but, somehow, life finds ways to make it harder and harder for her. After being left homeless, she married a boy she had a one night stand with, in order to get financial assistance from the state to rent a house. She is also still recovering from her breakup with her long terms boyfriend, a man who is back in her life, asking for forgiveness. Jo Soo Mi was pretty cute in this one and she had chemistry with both leads.

Yoon Soo is a popular college student because of his looks, but everyone seems to be talking about him behind his back, due to a rumor.  He agrees to marry In Young because she is the ex of his enemy, but, he falls in love with her and he is struggling to reveal his real motives to her. Kim Geon Won did a good job as the cold guy, and, for a newcomer, his performance was really good.

Chan Hee is an artist that goes by the penname “Rose”. He used to date In Young for 8 years, but, after getting a scholarship to study abroad, he breaks up with her and leaves her heartbroken. Now, he has regretted his decision and wants to get In Young back. Kang Hee was perfect as Chan Hee and he nailed his dramatic moments.

The drama had an interesting theme with the illustrations about In Young’s and Chan Hee’s relationship. The pace was perfect as well.
