After a long time, How Are You Bread finally was released but didn’t hit the momentum.
Story
Do Woo owns a bakery that is popular for the daily bread choices that is providing, as it is said that whoever eats that bread has their wishes come true. That is why people are lining up for a chance to buy one of the pastries before they sell out. Mi Rae is a young writer for a food program, for which her boss wants to include Do Woo. However, Do Woo is just unapproachable, as he hates publicity. Gradually, Mi Rae manages, after repeatedly trying, to get him into the bakery competition of the show. And, as the competition proceeds, the two of them get closer and closer. But, secrets of the past start to resurface as well.
The drama was short and cute. However, its length worked against him, as the story needed more time to be properly introduced and developed. Therefore, many plotlines felt half baked and rushed, even though they were concluded in the end. Maybe if the drama didn’t include so many twists, like the father-son story, the evil antagonist and competitor with her daughter trying to sabotage Do Woo, Mi Rae’s co-workers and family, the fantasy element, and focused more on the competition and the romance, they would have managed to pull it off. However, they did put too much stuff on their plates and in the end, things just happened so that the stories would be completed. Also, those many elements had an impact on romance. The story, even though it was light and had a happy and fluff mood when it started, it got more dramatic towards the ending, with the addition of the fantasy twist, that was not properly explained and needed more space to get presented. That is why the romance felt forced and didn’t make sense at times. For example, we know too little about the characters’ backgrounds and most of the time feels as if we are watching a glimpse of their life and not the whole picture. The ending, however, was nice, letting people imagine a happy ending for the couple.
Characters
Do Woo is a talented baker who loves his art, but is a difficult character. He doesn’t like being used by the media and he often lashes out when a journalist approaches him. His relationship with his father is a shaky one, as the latter doesn’t approve of his choice to work with flour. One of Suho’s first works, not his finest, but he was enjoyable enough and swoon-worthy.
Mi Rae is a hardworking young woman who dreams of one day visiting the northern lights. She is passionate about her work and cares about the bakers and her co-workers. Lee Se Young did a great job with her character, even with that hair that went from blond to grey for no reason, and her dramatic scenes were perfect. However, she didn’t have much chemistry with her partner.
Cinematography
The drama didn’t handle the story well, but the CGI were okay and the soundtrack nice enough.
Overall
My overall rating for this Korean drama is 5 out of 10. The drama had a messy story but had some nice notes.
