Korean Drama Please Don’t Date Him is a fun romance drama, but takes up too many plotlines

Story

Ji Sung works as a computer engineer, developing AI technology. Her most recent project is a smart fridge that can suggest food recommendations to the owner. However, after working late hours on it, having not reached the results expected, the fridge goes in flames and Ji Sung calls for the fire department. That is when Ji Sung first meets firefighter Gook Hee, a man who saves stray cats and uses old technology. That is also when a malefaction of the fridge due to the fire accident turns it into a computer that can access private information and reveal secrets. And one of the first people it exposes is Ji Sung’s fiance’s dirty secret that involves her.

Korean Drama Please Don’t Date Him has a solid first half and an okay second one. The story is triggered by the fridge incident and how Ji Sung uses it to get information on her boyfriend and the people her friends and family date in order to protect them.

However, it quickly shifts its focus away from the small dating cases and centers around the romantic relationship and the mystery of Gook Hee’s past.

And even though they used a time jump a bit awkwardly, the love story was fun and entertaining. The couple had chemistry and plenty of cute, romantic moments. The other couples were nice too, and they didn’t steal much of the main couple’s thunder.

The story remembered the fridge mystery in the final episodes, after resolving Gook Hee’s case. However, there wasn’t much time left for it to have proper development. Thus, some storylines, like the side characters’ story, were left unconcluded. The ending was odd too, as it suggested another turn of events for the main lead.

Characters

Ji Sung uses technology in her everyday life, especially since she has been good at engineering from a young age. However, after she is betrayed by her seven years boyfriend, she starts wondering how people reveal their private information to strangers online.

Song Ha Yoon is always fresh, entertaining and adorable. She did a great job here too.

Gook Hee is a firefighter who acts calmly in every situation. He is friendly, but a mysterious character, especially since he doesn’t trust modern technology and he avoids using social media and having his picture taken.

Lee Jun Young was really good as the main lead, though his character became annoying in the least episode. But, fortunately, it was quickly reversed.

Ye Seul has been unlucky in her partner choices. She seems to be falling for the worst, who uses her and never stays for long. However, she doesn’t seem to be willing to change her bad habits.

Yoon Bo Mi was fun and she gave a dynamic performance.

Gi Hyun is Ye Seul’s and Ji Sung’s friend. She owns an alternative coffee shop, where she offers odd drinks with even odder food presentations. She is married and she is trying to have a baby.

Gong Min Jung was delightful to watch, with a strong presense.

Cinematography

The drama has a quick pace, but it didn’t stick to one style of presenting the story.

Overall

My overall rating for the Korean Drama Please Don’t Date Him is 7 out of 10. Some storylines were fun to watch, but others were left unconcluded.
