Korean Drama True Beauty is light, funny but it gradually lost its novelty
Story
After being bullied at school because of her looks, Ju Kyung starts anew at a new high school, now disguising her true face under makeup. However, the cold heartthrob of the school, Su Ho, finds out about her secret and makes a contract with her to keep quiet if she serves him.
Korean Drama True Beauty is a nice blend of comedy, cute romance, and a light storyline with some drama here and there to keep things interesting. The mood of the drama is probably the best thing about True Beauty, as it feels like you’re actually reading the webtoon.
The romance is also adorable, with some sweet moments for the couple and smooth chemistry between the leads. However, the twist in the last episodes was too passe, oldish, and cheesy. Also, it was not handled properly, and thus, it ended up making things move rushly and with no pace.
As for the love triangle, the second lead was an interesting character, but he didn’t have many moments with the female lead. He was the only one pursuing the relationship and he made a lot of bad choices in the end. So, the love triangle was just so so, as it was obvious from the start that she was hung up on Su Ho.
Finally, the main story was okay, but it lost its momentum pretty quick. The scandals that appeared to aid with the plot were weak and boring, as they were too stretched out and ended up being too much fuss for nothing.
However, the side characters were what kept things fresh and entertaining when the main story was lagging. Those characters were interesting and funny enough when needed.
Characters
Ju Kyung is the ugly duckling of her family and she has been suffering because of it at school. She gets a second chance when she transfers to a new school and she polishes off her makeup skills, turning herself into a beautiful girl that quickly turns into a popular student, with lots of friends. However, now she has to hide her true self, who’s a geek who loves horror stories.
Moon Ga Young manages to turn into a high school student and she was enough cute and funny, not hesitating to spoil her image for her role. Her charms actually bring to mind her character in Exo Next Door.

Seo Jun is the bad boy of the school. He has taken a year off to take care of his sick mother and he seems to not care about his studies. He hates Su Ho who used to be his best friend.
Hwang In Yeop handled his ‘bad boy’ character really well and he was quite enjoyable.
Soo Jin is Su Ho’s friend and the only girl he talks to. She is one of the top students along with him and a family friend. She becomes friends with Ju Kyung and she often helps her out.
Park Yoo Na was really good in this drama, but her character was left undeveloped.

Cinematography
The drama has colorful and to the point aesthetics and handled the comedy parts nicely, but the pace wasn’t as smooth.
Overall
My overall rating from the Korean Drama True Beauty is 6 out of 10. The drama was a fun concept, but it was lagging.
