“A Little Thing Called First Love” had a smooth start, but collapsed towards the ending.
Story
When Miao Miao moves to a new school, she meets a prince like student, with whom, she falls in love with. However, she mistakes his name to be Kai Tuo, and she is confused, as rumours about Kai Tuo have him be a rude boy who doesn’t care about school and is a trouble maker. But, the boy she knows, is gentle and always helps her out.
The misunderstanding is cleared, when Miao Miao is assigned as deskmate of the real Kai Tuo’s, the stepbrother of her crush, You Niang. Miao Miao will try to change in order to have You Niang notice her, while he still thinks of her as his little sister.
Chinese drama “A little thing called first love”, adapted from the Thai movie “Crazy little thing called love”, described a love story that spanned through school years to college years.
Actually, the love story itself started towards the end, as the rest of the drama was pretty much about unrequited first loves. The love triangle, though, was pretty entertaining, though its conclusion was messy.
The family drama was also a nice touch, and gave the characters some depth and shifted the focus from the college life and friendship adventures to a more dramatic take. However, in the end, it felt underdeveloped and superficially only explored. The ending, finally, was rushed and badly handled.
Characters
Miao Miao is a shy student who is not confident about her looks. She eventually opens up and makes friends with the kids of her class. Those friendships will help her realize her own dreams and follow her heart. Angel Zhao had an endearing character, as she often shied off her true potential and got tiring to follow, but she did a great job with her performance.
You Niang is a gentle boy who is dreaming of becoming an architect. He is friendly and well mannered, appearing to have it all together, but, in reality, his family situation is messy. Edward Lin, also known as ex Wanna One member Lai Guan Lin, was pretty good for his debut as an actor, showing potential for a smooth acting career.
Kai Tuo is the bad boy of the school. He is rude and sarcastic, but, he is actually lonely and feeling lost due to his new family. Eventually, he will fall in love with Miao Miao, but he would handle his feelings awkwardly. Wang Run Ze, the most experienced of the group of friends, even though he looked like a high schooler, was a lovely second lead and his character was one of the best in the drama.
Cinematography
The drama had a nice pace, but they didn’t handle the love stories smoothly.
Overall
My overall rating for “A Little Thing Called First Love” is 6.5 out of 10. The drama was entertaining, but messy at times.
