Top Star Yoo Baek is a short drama with a comedy concept that started strong but lost its way halfway through.
Story
Yoo Baek is a top star, who, due to scandals, is forced to move to an island. As he is used to luxury living and having his way with everything, he is having a hard time adjusting to the new way of life, while living with a local girl, Kang Soon, and her grandmother. He is always criticizing everything the locals do and he finds them outraging.
That’s till he falls for Kang Soon. The girl, even though she is a strong young woman who seems simple, but hides a tragic story, manages to attract him, although they are completely different. However, Ma Dol, a young man who grew up with Kang Soon and was always in love with her, decides to confess his feelings to her and ask her to marry him. And the problem for Yoo Baek is that everyone on the island supports Ma Dol.
The story isn’t overcomplicated. It is the classic story of a celebrity finding his way to a remote rural place and discovering the joys of simple life. The love triangle was one of the best ones out there, as it was funny and cute at the same time. However, Yoo Baek kind of fell in love with Kang Soon out of the blue, when he was arguing with her in the previous scenes. Not that they didn’t have chemistry and the love story wasn’t nice and steamy, but it was rushed at first.
Overall, the comedy element was solid in this drama. However, some scenes were idiotic. That’s mainly because they made the side characters act like clowns most of the time, though they were adorable characters. Also, the pace was slow and that resulted in the drama being boring at times.
Characters
Yoo Baek is an arrogant superstar who acts like a spoiled kid most of the time. He hates the island at first and he dislikes its people and their way of life. However, he grows fond of them eventually. Kim Ji Suk is one of the actors you probably have seen in many dramas. He has a huge career and so it wasn’t a surprise that he managed the leading role so flawlessly.
Kang Soon is a young woman who lived on the island her whole life. She loves her grandmother who raised her and the island overall. She is annoyed by Yoo Baek and the way he disturbs their lives. But she eventually ends up liking him. Jeon So Min was so funny and adorable, though some times her character was a bit annoying and idiotic. But, compared to something about 1%, she was more energetic and bubbly.
Ma Dol is a captain of a ship and Kang Soon’s old friend. He is in love with her and he adorably tries to confess to her. He overall was a naive but cute character. And Lee Sang Yeob was adorable as well.
Cinematography
The presentation of the island was really well made with the scenery being breathtaking.
Overall
My overall rating is 6.5 out of 10. The story was okay, but the drama got boring towards the ending. Which is a shame, as the love story was really good.
