Story

Yoon Soo is a math teacher who is hired to teach at a prestigious high school. There she meets Seung Yoo, a boy who used to be a math genius but gave up and now he is indifferent towards his studies. Yoon Soo, however, sees something special in him, and, as she is a math enthusiast, she helps him fall in love with math again. Unfortunately, their relationship was misunderstood, and, after being fired and condemned by everyone, Yoon Soo disappears, only to come back a few years later to bring down the corrupted school system with the help of Seung Yoo.

Korean Drama Melancholia is a school melodrama.

The story has a dark academia vibe to it, as the two main characters truly love math and are passionate about it. Therefore, their love for numbers and the way they see the world around them connects them and strengthens their relationship; a relationship that remains a teacher-student and blooms into a friendship and commandership, with some elements of romance towards the ending.

The school drama, on the other hand, was boring, especially as the story was reaching its conclusion. It was a typical melodrama with the characters fighting a battle for power, but ending up being comically standard ‘bad guys’.

Moreover, the story didn’t have much to offer in the second half, with its characters and their intriguing personalities supporting it till the very end.
