KDrama Record of Youth was a slow paced peek into the life of struggling wannabe celebrities
Story
Hye Joon has spent his twenties trying to be famous. However, even though he has been active as a model, he still can’t get a break as an actor. He is considering giving up and enlisting, when he meets Jung Ha. Jung Ha is a makeup artist who appears to be bright and happy, but she is a loner, secretly fangirling over Hye Joon.
Korean Drama Record Of Youth did create a nice atmosphere. Even though it was slow paced, with an odd at first, interesting in the end, editing, it was heartwarming and refreshing.
The family drama was pretty intense, with strong dynamics between the parents and the children. That part gave the drama a more realistic twist to the main characters’ stories and explained most of their frustrating situations.
However, that’s where the good parts of the drama halt. The romance was original, yes, uninteresting and boring though. Kudos for the ending, which showed the natural progression of the relationship. Still, the love story lacked intensity and, quite frankly, purpose.
The rest of the drama felt like it was the life story of Park Bo Gum, with some fictional events added to it. And yet, it was more like it didn’t have a clear point to it. The time line, in addition, was messy and did not aid the already slow pace.
Characters
Hye Joon has one ambition, to finally make his dream come true and has his talent recognized. He has fashioned in his mind the way his career should be and what kind of celebrity he will portray. However, there are many obstacles in his way. He is, nevertheless, persistent and doesn’t give up.
Park Bo Gum was great as always, but his character was one dimensional at times.
Jung Ha is a young makeup artist who truly loves her job. However, she faces difficulties at her work, as she, even though looks bright and happy, is lonely and stressed out. She has a unique way of thinking and facing life, and, thus, she has chosen to be Hye Joon’s fan, even though he is still not famous.
Ahn Jung Ha was brilliant, but her character tended to be annoying.
Hae Hyo is Hye Joon’s best friend. But, unlike him, he is from a well off family and his career has taken a better turn than his friend’s. Still, he is a warm person who cares about those around him.
Byeon Woo Seok was a sweetheart and very enjoyable.
Cinematography
The timeline often was rushed, confusing and off, but the camerawork was smooth.
Overall
My overall rating for the Korean Drama Record of Youth is 5.5 out of 10. The drama was not boring, but often felt like it didn’t lead anywhere.
