Korean Drama Idol: The Coup is an enjoyable Idol Drama
Story
Cotton Candy is a Kpop girl group that is categorized as a failure in their industry. However, the girls don’t want to give up and disband. Thus, they make one last attempt to have a hit in order to save their group.
Korean Drama Idol: The Coup is an idol drama that centers around the five members of a girl group. It portrays their struggles to accept where they are and how they can fight against their disbandment.
The drama does a great job giving a twist in each episode to keep things interesting, while the main plot was progressing. Though, when it finally reached the last episode, it was clear that more time was needed in order to have a smoother ending.
Still, the drama didn’t add any unnecessary romance or comedy elements and kept things clean. Rather, it focused on the girls’ relationship and the struggles that celebrities face in the Kpop industry.
The girls’ problems, moreover, were not overplayed when it came down to the dramatic effect. On the contrary, they were closer to the slice of life genre, with a sensitive look on the friendship dynamics.
However, the one with the song was stretched a bit too much and it got boring, when a slice of its time could have been used for the final outcome.
Still, the drama kept things realistic, with an original and refreshing ending and great songs.
Characters
Je Na is Cotton Candy’s leader. She is an easy-going character who often takes up the role of the middle man that resolves any conflict between the members and the glue that keeps them together. And, at times, she is the only one who works so that the group will keep going, even if she takes on all the criticism from the fans, the industry and, even, her own bandmates.
Ahn Hee Yeon gave an enjoyable and diverse performance.
