Title : Dokgo Rewind

Genre : Action, Drama, School, Fighting scenes, Tragedy, Revenge

Story : 6 out of 10

Characters : 6 out of 10

A short (very short!) drama that gathered a lot of attention around it because of the main lead, Exo’s Sehun. However, the story was a complete failure.

Story

Main Poster-THE fight scene

Kang Hyuk and his friends are just spending their days hanging out and fighting only when they have to, although they are really good at it. That’s until they meet a high school boy, who was bullied by his classmates. Gyu Soon, the boy in mention, pleads to help him and explains to them his sad story : His sister was asked on a date by her class’s gang leader because she is pretty. However, the girl who is in the same gang as him, gets jealous and forces Gyu Soon’s sister to drink bleach, after beating her.

Kang Hyuk and his friend decide to help the boy and teach him how to fight and fend for himself. In the meantime, the school’s gang sent their best fighters to beat the friends and teach them a lesson to stop interfering with their business. Things escalate and, on the way back from the hospital, Gyu Soon and his sister are captured and the boy is beaten up badly in front of his sister, to force her to date the team’s leader. Fortunately, Kang Hyuk arrives and saves the siblings. However, during the night, Gyu Soon dies due to his injuries. Thus, Kang Hyuk seeks to revenge him and to keep his sister safe.

So, the story seems good at first, but soon, the many, many, many characters that are added to the plot get it confusing and you quickly can lose track of what it’s happening and who’s who. Also, even though the pace is okay for such a short drama, the story was mostly fighting scenes and a few dialogues here and there. In addition, there was no background story to any of the characters and so, we only got what we saw. For example, Kang Hyuk was a one-dimensional character. We only knew that he had a brother, who was the ‘good’ boy of his family. I would like to know, for instance, what was his deal, why wasn’t he at school, or working, or fulfilling a dream or something. He was just there, fighting and doing graphite…

Finally, the ending. If this one has a second season, hopefully with a more lengthy story, I can see this one as a prequel to it. Especially, judging from the webtoon and the story there, this one was the prequel to the main story. However, if this was a one-shot thing, then the ending was horrible, as it left the story wide open!

Characters

Kang Hyuk is a youngster who loves his friends and has a strong sense of justice. Although he is clearly the black sheep of his family, he doesn’t hate his twin brother, who looks like the family’s favorite. Kang Hyuk also is good with fighting (no idea why, he just is). So, Sehun was good in the fighting scenes. However, he was just emotionless in every other scene. Not that the scenario helped him, but I really didn’t like his performance and I was disappointed, as he seemed to have potential in Exo Next Door.

Cinematography

The fighting scenes were actually very good and decently choreographed. They looked real and the shots were sharp and edgy.

Overall

My overall rating for Dokgo is 5 out of 10. The action scenes were great and some characters were likable, but the plot was a mess.
