Lookism handled the body switch masterfully but the pace was messy.
Story
Wen Shuai transfers to a new school, after being a victim of bullying in his old one. He hopes for a new start, to make friends and date a girl, possibly his beautiful and kind neighbor To Qiao, though he isn’t confident enough due to his “ugly” looks.
And then, a miracle happens: Wen Shuai discovers that he can leave his old body sleeping and move into a new, handsome body. This switch makes him immediately popular, and gives him what he always wanted, friends.
However, his new body doesn’t only come with the struggles of keeping his secret from his friends, but with lots of dangerous secrets as well.
Lookism blended the stories of the high school students with the fantasy element of the body-switching.
The mystery of it was satisfying and well built. The whole drama, also, gave off youthful vibes and a sweetness, as the kids bonded and friendships were created.
Romance vise, this wasn’t a strong element of the drama, but they didn’t confuse the two characters as to who gets the girl, which was a relief.
However, there were some episodes that were draggy, as they didn’t follow the action driven ones. The ending, finally, was bittersweet.
Characters
Wen Shuai is a boy who due to his looks and gentle character, has been bullied severely until he was forced to change schools. He is a friendly and sweet character, however, because of his low self-esteem, he is afraid to approach others. That is why when he switches bodies, he finally gets the chance in life he always wished for.
Wayne Zhang, the “ugly” Wen Shuai, was amazing and he did a really good job with his character.
Park Solomon, the “handsome” Wen Shuai, was pretty impressive in the action scenes.
Tao Qiao is the new neighbor of Wen Shuai when he moves to the city. She is kind hearted, always defending and caring for the “ugly” Wen Shuai, as she wants to protect him.
Wang Zi Xuan was subtle but a nice addition to the cast.
Cinematography
The body switching was mastered in this one, as it was smooth and realistic. The mystery was well constructed too.
Overall
My overall rating for the chinese drama Lookism is 7 out of 10. Although there were some boring moments, the drama was a roller coaster of emotions.
