Tokyo Love Story was entertaining as well as frustrating.
Story
Kanji moves to Tokyo due to his work as an advertiser. There he meets Rika, a senior at his office, who is outgoing and friendly. He also reunites with his old classmate, Kenichi, who is studying to become a doctor, and Satomi, for whom he has feelings for.
However, when he asks her out, she doesn’t respond. Heartbroken, Kanji will find comfort in Rika, who will suggest that they should start an epic love story. Meanwhile, Kenichi and Satomi will start dating, however, she will be more into their relationship than he is.
Tokyo Love Story presented the complexity of human emotions and human relationships.
Each character was different and there were plenty of frustrating moments, as they were trying to find their footings into their relationships.
And there were some endings that just weren’t that great, but the drama kept a realistic view on who the characters were and what were their circumstances.
The pace was well managed as well, and, thus, the drama didn’t get boring or tiring, but kept the foot on the accelerator throughout its length.
Characters
Kanji is a young man from the countryside who moves to the big city. He is all big eyes about everything and he is excited about his new life.
When he meets Rika, he is a bit intimidated by her carefree and nonchallenging character, but he falls for her and he is willing to change his ways for her.
Ito Kentaro was pretty great as Kanji and his performance was smooth and emotional.
Rika is a free-spirited modern, professional woman who sees life differently. She is friendly, compulsive, sentimental and dances in her own drums’ rhythm.
There are rumors about her dating her boss, but she shows interest in young Kanji, who can make her laugh.
Ishibashi Shizuka was the star of the drama and she did an amazing job with her character.
Kenichi is Kanji’s old classmate. He is a playboy who cares only about himself.
When he learns that Kanji is in love with Satomi, he quickly rushes to seduce her, promising her things that he isn’t willing to do.
Kiyohara Sho‘s character was the bad one of the drama, but his performance was nice, especially when it came to those emotional scenes.

Satomi is a friend of Kanji and Kanichi. She is a pretty girl with a warm heart. However, she is very unlucky when it comes to love.
Ishii Anna‘s character was one of those you can’t help but sympathize with, and she was really great and enjoyable as Satomi.
Cinematography
The drama had a fast paced story and their cinematography of Tokyo gave the right aesthetics to the drama.
Overall
My overall rating for the Japanese Drama Tokyo Love Story is 8 out of 10. The drama was a character-driven story, and it was well managed and interesting.
