Shut Up Flower Boy Band is the second drama of the Oh! Boy! series and it deals with a rather different theme than the rest of the series, managing to become the best one.

Story

Ji Hyuk and his friends are members of a popular band and they rule their school. That is until they are forced to transfer to one of the prestigious high schools, where it is obvious that they don’t belong. They are bullied by the teachers and the students alike. So, the boys start to wonder if is worth staying at school at all. However, they decide to take over their class again and compete for head to head with their school rivals, the Strawberry Fields band.

The story has some romance, sure, but it is more than that. Unlike the other dramas of the series that are mostly about cute love stories, this one deals with coming of age problems, the gap between the social classes and the bonds of friendship. It also explores the theme of the entertainment industry and the way the band managed to stay strong and help the boys with their personal tragedies. So, overall, the story is entertaining and refreshing, although it is kind of dark. However, towards the end, the drama tended to stick with more cliché approaches on the friendship front. Still, it was interesting to watch.

Characters

Ji Hyuk is a poor high school student who struggles getting by. However, he considers his bandmates and friends as his family. Due to some unfortunate events, he ends up befriending his neighbor and fellow classmate, and they start living together. That’s when Ji Hyuk starts having feeling for her. However, even though he is gentle and caring, he still feels unsuited for her, as he is not really accepted at his school. Sung Joon was really good as Ji Hyuk, as he had the right amount of roughness and melancholy that he’s character needed.

Soo Ah is a student at the same school as Ji Hyuk. She is beautiful, but she is bullied because she is poor. She finds Ji Hyuk fascinating and she enjoys spending time with his friends. Jo Bo Ah was fresh and cute in this one, and she was perfect as the tragic character who needed friends to survive.

Cinematography

The drama had a dark vibe and a more realistic approach, managing the pace nicely and blending all the themes masterfully.

Overall

My overall rating for this drama is 8 out of 10. It was enjoyable and it had an almost melodrama taste.
