Story

Dok Mi is an antisocial girl who doesn’t leave her apartment. Jin Rak is her neighbor next door who knows her odd habits and yet, he is in love with her. However, due to her never coming out, he had never had a chance to meet her. Enrique is a guy who moves in the apartment opposite to Dok Mi’s. Thus, Dok Mi ends up spying on him. And when Enrique spots her spying on him, he confronts her. From then on, their story begins, as he tries to force her out of her comfort zone and to start living her life.

The story is a classic, old korean drama story, with tons of cute moments and misunderstanding. Even though nowadays the dramas tend to be more, well, dramatic and dark, Flower Boy Next Door brings back an era of innocent romance and adorable love triangles. However, as often happens, the story never explores the characters deeper or provides a better explanation for their behavior, other than the often used tragic past.

For what is worth, Flower Boy Next Door has a sweet friendship plot, even if the romance was not as good. And that’s because Dok Mi and Enrique were more like brother and sister for most of the drama than a couple. Plus, Enrique treated her as his new project rather than a love interest. However, the love triangle was really good.

Another enjoyable aspect was the cute side characters. Dok Mi’s and Enrique’s adventures were nice as well, and some of them even funny. However, the highlight was the characters. All of them are adorable and relatable, providing some entertaining moments in the, otherwise, kind of basic plot.

Characters

Dok Mi is an introverted young woman who suffers from agoraphobia. Therefore, she prefers to stay in her apartment, spying on her neighbors. When she meets her new neighbor, she is forced to face her fears and to go out into the world. Thus, she meets new friends and she finds the joys of life and even loves. Park Shin Hye knows how to play the helpless hero, in need of rescue, as well as the strong lead when it is needed. Here, she was adorable and the perfect protagonist.

Enrique is a friendly, bubbly and optimistic young man who moves in the apartment opposite to Dok Mi. Even though he is bright, he hides a dark past. Still, he is loved by everyone and he likes to help the people around him. Yoon Shi Yoon had the boyish look for the role and he was really good as the naive, happy go lucky male lead.

Jin Rak is Dok Mi’s next-door neighbor. He is moody and unapproachable, but really, he cares about Dok Mi and understands her. However, he too hides secrets of his own. Kim Ji Hoon was probably the best love antagonist and he provided the drama with a strong love triangle, even better than the actual love story.

Cinematography

The drama handled the pace really well at first, but kind of lost it towards the end. However, the settings were nice and the story well managed.

Overall

My overall rating for this drama is 6 out of 10. The drama was nice, but not the best flower boy drama out there Plus, even though the start was strong, the second half was weak and the romance odd as well.
