Japanese Manga Adaption Movies Pt. 1

Everyone knows that adapting a book or a manga to a movie is risky. Especially when it comes to your favorite one. However, some adaptions were really good and decent enough, being enjoyed by fans of the manga and simple viewers alike. So, here is my list of my favorite manga adaptions

Title : P To JK

Genre : shoujo, romance

The movie is about a girl who pretends to be 22 when she is in reality 16. She meets a guy and they hit it off until he realizes her real age. Moreover, it turns out that he is a police officer to boot. The movie was cute and it had some twists here and there when it came down to the love story. However, I should warn you that this one has a romantic relationship with a minor, so, if you aren’t that comfortable with that kind of age gaps, then you might not want to try this one, although the romance was very innocent and cute.

Title : Orange

Genre : School, Romance, Fantasy

Orange is one of the classic shoujo manga that, if you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. The movie doesn’t stray too far from the original story: a high school girl gets a letter from her older self asking her to befriend the new boy who joined their class. The movie has some innocent vibes, as well as melancholic ones, solid friendship bonds, and a subtle romance. Plus, Kento Yamazaki is the main character.

Title : Rurouni Kenshin

Genre : War, Samurai, Action

One of my favorite trilogies of all time, Rurouno Keshin follows the adventures of a samurai with the same name, who used to be an infamous assassin. The sword battles were just incredible and the cinematography award-worthy. Plus, the costumes and the settings looked very authentic. In addition, the great performances and the action-packed plot make it a must trilogy.

Title : Death Note

Genre : Fantasy, Crime, Psychological

One of the most famous manga and anime of all times, Death Note is the story of Light, who finds a mysterious note one day. If you write a name on the note, that person will die. Light starts a crusade to kill every criminal and villain and create a secure and crimeless society. The Japanese (obviously not the Netflix one, please, do not watch that one!!) was actually a decent adaptions of the manga, without overdoing it when it came to costumes and CGI. With only 11 episodes, major twists and great performances, you might want to give Death Note a shot.

Title : Wolf Girl and Black Prince

Genre : School, Shoujo, Romance

If you have read the manga, you’ll know that the movie did great justice to it. If not, then you will just enjoy the movie. Typical Shoujo school story, about a girl who gets involved with the school’s prince, only to find out that he is a cruel, cold guy who treats her like his dog. With the real prince of shoujo adaptions, Kento, and a sweet and cute mood throughout the movie, this one will be a treat if you enjoy rom coms.

Title : Cats Don’t Come When You Call

Genre : Cats, slice of life, comedy, drama

A really sweet story about a man who adopts two kittens and they change his life forever. We watch him raise them, learn their characters, their stories, and his story as well. This movie is so sweet and real, that, if you have cats or pets, you’ll definitely enjoy it and understand it.
