Anime Review : Cardcaptor Sakura

Cardcaptor Sakura

Shoujo, magical girl, some action, some love story

Art : 8/10

Music: 8/10

Characters: 8/10

My rating: 9/10

Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the classics animes. Probably everyone has watched one or two episodes of the series, as many TV networks had picked it up in the past (it’s an old one). So many childhood memories!

I’ve started watching the first anime season way way back, but restarted it for my spring anime list. This season has 70 episodes (yeah, a big one…) and it follows a young girl, Sakura, as she tries to regain magical cards that they have been released into the world and they were making a mess out of it. She has a small magical creature with her, Kero (probably have seen him somewhere ??)

and her best friend, Tomoyo (style goals) who enjoys dressing her up and video taping her adventures. So, the anime is pretty much about this magical girl and her activities as a cardcaptor. Fortunately, this anime doesn’t let down with the action and the story line, so it doesn’t really gets boring or tiring, even though it’s quite long.

However, when the season ends, things are kind of left on a cliff hanger. So, you do have to watch Movie 1 and Movie 2.

The first movie takes Sakura to Hong Kong where she battles with an old witch and she meets Shaoran’s family. The second movie has better aesthetics with a nice story and intensity when it comes to the love story. The ending was also sweet and adorable.

There is a side story with Kero (Leave it to Kero chan) which is funny, but, if you have watched the second movie, after the credits, it’s pretty much those scenes with some more dialogue in them. So, you can skip that one if you want.

And then, after many many many years, we get the Prologue, Sakura to Futastu no Kuma, a new episode, focusing on Sakura’s and Shaoran’s relationship. The episode not only gives some nostalgic feels but also gives us a taste of what season 2 will be like. The season in question comes out a year later and, so far, has aired 16 episodes.

So, what is this season about? And how is this one different from the older one? Well, first of all, plot-wise, Shaoran’s and Sakura’s relationship is in the development stage, the cards are now clear crystal and there is a mysterious creature of time controlling power. Also, when it comes to the anime’s art, it is different. Not only Sakura is older, (and now she is using up to date devices, even drones) but the style of art is different. I do miss the old one, I’m not gonna lie. Also, when it comes to story and pace, the anime focuses on the slice of lifestyle, with cooking lessons, girly tea parties and pretty much everything is cute, pink, happy, lovely and actionless. There are some hints of mystery, but so far, I’m not impressed.

Character

Sakura is an adorable character. She is funny, cute, bubbly and sweet. She also has a optimistic way of seeing things and that, along with her friendly personality, makes her the perfect magical girl.

Shaoran is a nice male lead. He is so adorable when he gets mad and he is always there for Sakura, saving her when she needs it. Though, in season two, he is more mature and less there.

Tomoyo, Sakura’s friend, is also a character that adds some cute moments to the anime and she supports Sakura, as she is always there when the action occurs. However, she doesn’t really help with the action…

Kero is the funny part of the anime. Although he’s the cute sidekick, his passion for food, especially sweets, and his encounters with Sakura’s brother, are hilarious and give the anime a more comical note.

ART

When it comes to the art of the anime, the first season was more of the old school one, with vivid colors and fun characters. The CLAMP significant details are visible, especially when it comes to the adult characters. Season two, so far, misses those things. They do focus more on the aesthetical side, not that the art isn’t beautiful, with paster colors and a romantic attitude.

Overall

Season one is a must-watch, but it needs the two movies as well to be completed. Season two, not that good, but it’s too soon to tell.

So, have you watched Sakura before? Are you going to start the current season?
